multimedia player and streamer

VLC is the VideoLAN project's highly portable media player for various audio and video formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It plays MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4, DivX, MOV, WMV, QuickTime, mp3, Ogg/Vorbis files, DVDs, VCDs, and multimedia streams from various network sources.

VLC can also be used as a streaming server that duplicates the stream it reads and multicasts them through the network to other clients, or serves them through HTTP.

VLC has support for on-the-fly transcoding of audio and video formats, either for broadcasting purposes or for movie format transformations. Support for most output methods is provided by this package, but features can be added by installing additional audio plugins (vlc-plugin-esd, vlc-plugin-sdl, vlc-plugin-arts, vlc-plugin-pulse) or video plugins (vlc-plugin-sdl, vlc-plugin-ggi, vlc-plugin-glide, vlc-plugin-svgalib). There is also a web browser plugin in the mozilla-plugin-vlc package.

  1. Ikipou dit :

VLC is a great media player. It plays virtually anything without the need to install external dependency.

Cherry on the cake, it is written with Qt so it is well integrated in GNOME and KDE.

  2. Chadi dit :

With smplayer, VLC is the best video player, all systems included. It works on Mac OS X and Windows too, so you probably already know how to use it.

  3. EVS dit :

    best video player!

  4. Luís Fernando dit :

We all think VLC is a great player, but it's bug on ubuntu just sucks. The video output always opens on a separate window, this makes the program loose it's usability appealing.

  5. rMatey dit :

Don't look any further. Love the convert/save, you can get a lot of mp3 files quickly.

  8. tuxsoftware dit :

Best video player available for Linux or any OS in general...

Not completely newbie friendly but in no way a complicated application.

  9. Dillon Chaffey dit :

VLC media player has worked very well for me since I installed it onto both of my systems running Kubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx). The major downfall I noticed was the random closing of the program, very irritating when I am trying to show off my new sound system. Overall, assuming it doesn't close on you as often as it does for me it is a very good program which is easily expandable.

Also venugopal, there is an easier way to install VLC media player automatically in less that two minutes. To do so follow the steps below:

    1. Open terminal or Konsole
    2. Type "sudo -i" then enter your password
    3. Type "sudo apt-get install vlc

That's it. Now you just need to wait for it to install in the terminal window and then find it in your "start" button on the taskbar under the appropriate program category.
